As the elevator descended, Valenzuela could feel her heart pounding in her chest. The anticipation of what awaited her on the ground level was almost unbearable. She closed her eyes, trying to calm her nerves, and clutched the folded piece of paper tightly in her hand. It was a relic from her past, a symbol of hope and resilience that she had longed to hold again.
The weight of the paper reassured her, reminding her of the countless battles she had fought and the victories she had achieved. It was a reminder of her strength and determination, and she hoped that it would bring her luck in this critical moment. She knew that every decision she made now could mean the difference between life and death.
As the elevator doors finally opened, Valenzuelaâs eyes darted around the hallway, searching for any signs of danger or allies. Her gaze landed on an emergency exit door, and without hesitation, she made her way towards it. The door swung open effortlessly, revealing a cool and damp atmosphere that sent a shiver down her spine. It was a stark contrast to the tense and suffocating environment she had just left behind.
However, as Valenzuela surveyed her surroundings, she realized that she was not as close to the landing field as she had hoped. The dropship, her only means of escape, was nowhere in sight. Panic began to rise within her, threatening to consume her resolve. She desperately tried to think of a plan, her mind racing with possibilities. Perhaps Harris, Riley, and Holly had already made it out and left with Sparks in the dropship. The thought of being left behind, abandoned in this hostile environment, was excruciating. She couldnât bear the idea of missing them by mere minutes.
A sudden, piercing sound reverberated through the air, causing her heart to skip a beat. Her eyes darted upwards, searching for the source of the noise. And there it wasâa sight that brought immense relief flooding through her veins. The dropship, a majestic beast of metal and power, soared through the sky towards her. Its sleek form glinted in the sunlight, a beacon of hope amid chaos. With precision and grace, it descended towards the designated landing spot, a good fifty meters away from her current position.
A surge of adrenaline coursed through her weary body as she realized that salvation was within reach. Ignoring the searing pain that radiated from her legs, she mustered every ounce of strength she had left and began limping towards the dropship. Each step was a battle against exhaustion, but the thought of safety propelled her forward. The ground beneath her feet seemed to stretch endlessly, mocking her with its distance. But she refused to succumb to despair. She had come too far to give up now.
As she neared the dropship, her legs screamed in protest, threatening to give way beneath her. Just when she thought she could go no further, a figure emerged from the belly of the ship. It was Sparks, a trusted comrade and a beacon of unwavering support.
